Call Summary

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROGRAM

To promote professor’s training in doctorate programmes that include training and investigation activity, to facilitate a future incorporation in the Spanish Education and Investigation System. There are announced 950 grants.

SUBSIDIZED COSTS

  • Salary for PhD students.
  • There is also the option to obtain funding for temporary stays in another organisation in Spain or abroad. This complementary funding will be ruled by some new call to come in future for those students that are granted by the FPU program.

LENGTH OF THE GRANT

4 years (2 years grant + 2 years training contract)

DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING APPLICATIONS

  • 07/12/2009 according to official call (20 natural days after the date of the publication of the call; 17/11/2009).
  • 09/12/2009 according to website and phone information (902218500). Therefore, it is advisable to submit applications by 07/12/2009 in order to avoid any problems.

REQUISITES FOR BENEFICIARIES

  • To have obtained the necessary degree that provides access to university PhD studies.
  • Academic score higher than 1.60 points (Aprobado = 1, Notable = 2, Sobresaliente = 3, Matrícula de Honor = 4)
  • Those foreign candidates who don’t have NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjeros) must prove be living in Spain (signed in some municipal).
  • To have finished the studies before the following dates:

- In case of licentiates, engineers and architects in foreign studies no adapted to the EEES, the date of the degree must be after 2007 January 1st.

- In case of diplomas, technique engineers and technique architects, the date of the degree must be after 2005 January 1st.

- In case of 180 credits Grade Studies (estudios de grado), the date of the degree must be after 2005 January 1st.

- In case of 240 credits Grade Studies (estudios de grado), the date of the degree must be after 2006 January 1st.

  • The date of the degree can be to 2003 (never before than this date), only in the following cases:

- Those licentiates in Medicine, Pharmacy, Chemistry or Psychology, who in the moment of the application have the Speciality Degree in Medicine (MIR), Pharmacy (FIR), Chemistry (QUIR) or Psychology (PIR), or Biology (BIR).

- Those licentiates who prove to have being taking care of children under six years, from 2003 to 2007. To have been admitted in a doctorate program for the academic course of 2009-2010, regulated by some of next laws: Real Decreto 778/1998, Real Decreto 56/2005, Real Decreto 1393/2007

HOME ORGANISATIONS (Centros de Adscripción)

  1. Non profit Spanish Universities, public or private, CSIC or OPIs (Organismos Públicos de Investigación).
  2. Public or private Non profit Research Entities. These centres must keep links with destination universities, in which beneficiaries are enrolled for the PhD degree.

FUNDING

Maximum period is 48 months, divided in 2 subperiods:

  • 1st sub-period (maximum of 24 months): Grant subsidized with 1.142 € monthly.
  • 2nd sub- period (maximum of 24 months): Training Contract subsidized with 1.173 € monthly (14 wages per year)

GRANT STARTING TIME

The incorporation to the Home Organisations should take place no longer than one month’s time after the date of the publication of results.

REQUISITES OF THESIS DIRECTORS

  • To have obtained a PhD degree
  • To have a labour relation with the home organisation (those where the granted students will carry out their research activities) for a longer period than the length of the grant (48 months). If the director does not fulfil this requisite, it will be compulsory to have a co-director who does.
  • Each director can not submit more than one application, but can be co-director in other applications.

OBLIGATIONS OF HOME ORGANISATIONS

In case of non university home organisations that don’t have any active agreement with the Ministry of Education, it will be necessary to attach to the application these next documents:

  • Home organisation info sheet (standard template)
  • Agreement with the university where the PhD degree will be hold.
  • Statutes of the home organisation.

COMPATIBILITIES OF THE GRANT

  • The grant is incompatible with other grants financed with public or private funds with a similar goal.
  • The grant is compatible with the following:
  • Training activities related to the investigation or training project develop by the beneficiary, and that do not carry a work contract.
  • Grants for attending congresses and similar events.
  • Grants for short-length stays and temporary mobility.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Application must be prepared by applicant students by using next website supplied by the Ministry: https://www.educacion.es/becasfpu/home.do
  • Each candidate can only submit one application.
  • Once all the information has been fulfilled and submitted electronically, a printable application document will be generated by the website. This document should be signed and sent by postal delivery to: Dirección General de Política Universitaria, podrán presentarse en el Registro del Ministerio de Educación (C/ Albacete, 5, 28071 Madrid)

DOCUMENTS TO PREPARE SUBMIT

Application must be prepared on next website supplied by the Ministry: https://www.educacion.es/becasfpu/home.do Documents to prepare and upload via web (up to 4MB each document) (allowed formats: .doc, .pdf and .rtf,):

  • CV of the candidate (standard template)
  • Technical memory about the research project (standard template)
  • CV of the thesis director (standard template)
  • Scientific record of the destination research team.
  • Thesis director’s report about the relation between the proposed research project and the PhD degree that the applicant joins. Once all the information has been fulfilled, uploaded and submitted electronically, a printable application form will be generated by the website. This document must be signed by the candidate and the legal representative of the Home Organisation, and sent by postal mail to Ministry. Therefore, documents to be submitted by postal mail are the next ones:

  • Application form generated via web (signed by applicant and thesis director)
  • Identity document for Spanish candidates and for foreign candidates residents in Spain
  • Academic certification to prove the credits, qualifications, academia course and the store and the subjects (in case the degree is in some language different from Spanish, an official translation into Spanish must be attached).
  • Accreditation of the admission in the doctorate

ALL DOCUMENTS INCLUDED IN THE APPLICATION AND SENT BY POSTAL MAIL MUST BE ORIGINALS OR CERTIFIED COPIES.

EVALUATION OF PROPOSALS

  • Scientific interest and training capacity of the programme (up to 0,5 point).
  • CV of the candidate (up to 1 point).
  • Participation in doctorate studies scored with the Mención de Calidad in 2008 (up to 0,5 point).
  • CV of the thesis director (up to 2 points).
  • Scientific record of the destination research team of the last 5 years (up to 1 point).
