Artificial molecular switches and motors - a topic that was awarded the 2016 Nobel award - hold great promise for the design of novel, functional nanosystems. I will report results of our work within the interdisciplinary collaborative research center 677 in Kiel "Function by switching",  which has exploited the design and function of molecular switches and their integration into complex environments over the last 10 years. The talk will focus on scanning tunneling microscopic, spectroscopic, and X-ray scattering studies of photoswitchable molecules at condensed matter surfaces and interfaces. A molecular construction set will be presented which allows mounting of these switches in highly defined arrangements on solid surfaces and controlling their lateral spacings and electronic coupling to the substrate. Furthermore, molecular switches can be embedded and switched in phospholipid membranes, enabling their nanomechanical excitation. Finally, also switching of adsorbate dynamics and aggregation by the strong electric fields at electrochemical interfaces will be addressed.
