nanoGUNE PhD Workshop 2020

The Ph.D. students of nanoGUNE are organizing a one-day event to celebrate the 11th anniversary of the institute. This workshop will take place at nanoGUNE on 30 January 2020.

This year, the workshop consists of three sessions: (1) Spin-off inside and outside of nanoGUNE, (2) Escape the lab, and (3) a poster session.

In the first session, different speaker will talk about starting, developing, and maintaining a spin-off company. After lunch, we will continue with a lab tour combined with a scavenger hunt. Both of these will be internal sessions open to all nanoGUNE members.

The event will conclude with a poster session where the Ph.D. students will show off their work. This part of the workshop will be open to the general public as well. 

Program

10.00 – 13.30: Spin-off & nanoGUNE (including a Coffee break)

This session is focused on how spin off companies start from a research idea and evolve into a successful company. We asked the speakers to share the challenges they encountered when creating a spin off company, developing a business model, looking for investors, etc.

  • Ainara García Gallastegui (Technology Transfer Manager of CIC nanoGUNE) will talk about her work at nanoGUNE and the opportunities and policies within nanoGUNE for creating a spin-off and/or a patent.
  • Patricia Riego (Data analyst at GHI Smart Furnaces) will explain her experience in making the move from nanoGUNE to a private company. 
  • Mercedes Vila Juárez (CTO and founder of Biotech Foods SL) will share experience in building up a spin off within nanoGUNE.
  • Stephen Hodge (Hear of research of Versarian plc) will share the story of his company. 

13.30 – 15.00: Lunch

15.00 – 17.00: Escape the lab. This session is internal, but registration in this link is required. 

The main goal of this activity is to show the equipment and the labs such that you can get an idea of the work that is performed in each lab. The activity will include a presentation which will give an introduction/description into the work that is conducted in the lab/within the research group. Furthermore, in each lab a riddle/puzzle/experiment etc. needs to be solved to get a clue. There is a maximum time of 10 minutes per lab. After all the labs are visited, the sum of the clues should lead you to a final destination.  

17.00 – 18.00: Poster session + drinks. This session is open to everybody but REGISTRATION (below in this page) is required [Deadline 24 January]

In this activity, the PhD students from nanoGUNE will present their works in a poster session. The students will have the chance to defend and discuss their work with scientific colleagues from the different research centers in San Sebastian. At the end of the session, a jury will award the best one based on the quality of the poster and the research carried out.

Speakers

Dr. Ainara Garcia obtained her PhD in chemistry from the university of the Basque Country in 2009. She has 15 years of experience in consulting and research applied to nanotechnology and was co-author of 5 commercial granted patents. Currently she is technology transfer manager at nanoGUNE where she coordinates internal research activity towards market needs.

Dr. Patricia Riego got her PhD in Physics of Nanostructures and Advanced Materials from the University of the Basque Country – CIC nanoGUNE in 2019. The PhD was executed in the nanomagnetism group under the supervision of Prof. Andreas Berger. Now, she is working as a data analyst at GHI SMART FURNACES, an industrial engineering company dedicated to the supply of equipment for the fusion, heat treatment and heating of metals.

Dr. Mercedes Vila received her PhD suma cum laude in Materials Physics from the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain in 2003. After her PhD, she covered several scientific positions which the focus on the design and application of materials in biomedicine and understanding cell-materials surface interactions. During this period she was awarded several Marie Curie actions and a Women in Science Award. L'Oreal Foundation-UNESCO. In 2015 she made the transition from academia to industry becoming the Scientific Director of Coating Technologies-CTECHnano and in 2017 she co-founded the company Biotech Foods SL holding the CTO position in the company. 

Dr. Stephen Hodge is Principal Engineer at Cambridge Graphene Ltd. He is also a Postdoctoral Research Associate and Teaching Fellow in Graphene Technology in the Cambridge Graphene Centre (CGC) at the University of Cambridge and bye-fellow in Chemistry at Murray Edwards College. He graduated from the University of Bath with a MChem in Chemistry in 2008 and then obtained his PhD in Nanomaterials Chemistry at Imperial College London in 2012. In 2014 Stephen joined the CGC at the University of Cambridge. The mission of the Cambridge Graphene Centre is to investigate the science and technology of graphene, carbon allotropes, layered crystals and hybrid nanomaterials. This engineering innovation centre allows to meet, and effectively establish joint industrial-academic activities to promote innovative and adventurous research with an emphasis on applications.
