Photonic monitoring of physiology

The Nanoengineering Group is working on the development of a pH/lactate sensor for assisting childbirth delivery.

The photonic methods we are utilizing are near-infrared, Raman, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). To make weak signals visible and to detect extremely little variations in physiological conditions, we develop novel algorithms based on principal component analysis (PCA), partial least square (PLS) methods, support vector machines (SVM) and non-linear methods.

The superior goal is to implement an optical system for measuring fetal lactate concentration and pH variations during labour in a non-invasive manner. The system will measure these parameters in a continuous way allowing the obstetricians to take fast medical decisions and also to reduce the number of C-sections. In an advanced stage, the photonic system will be combined with sensing modules for vital signs to perform highly integrated multimodal diagnostics.
