International Day of Women and Girls in Science - 2018
International Day of Women and Girls in Science - 2018
In order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, the United Nations General Assembly decided in 2016 to declare 11th February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
On 8 and 9 February, CIC nanoGUNE, the Materials Physics Center (MPC, CSIC - UPV/EHU), CIC biomaGUNE and the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) will celebrate that day, organizing a series of events which aim is to bring visibility to the activities of women working in scientific reserach, to break with the archetypical masculine roles usually attributed to science and technology, and encourage scientific careers choices among girls and teenagers.
Events
1. Do you know any women in science?
February 8, 9:15 - 12:15 at nanoGUNE and biomaGUNE
School children
This is a workshop for girls and boys between 10 and 11 years old. The female researchers of the organizing centers will lead different activities to highlight the role of women in science over history and perform science demonstrations. The workshop will have a duration of 2 hours.
This year, around 50 students from Ibai Ikastola and a group from San Alberto Magno Deutsche Schule will participate in this workshop.
2. Donostia: City of women researchers
February 8, 19:00 at Koldo Mitxelena, Salón de actos & Udaberri-berri bar
Open for all publics. Free entrance until full capacity is reached. The talks will be in Spanish.
Short outreach talk session by women researchers from our research centers. The talks will deal with scientific hot topics. Afterwards, we will meet at Udaberri-berri bar to continue with the chat in a friendly atmosphere while having something to drink with our speakers.
- Dra. Sara Barja (Ikerbasque Research Fellow, CFM)
- Dra. Maia García (Ikerbasque Research Fellow, DIPC. Loreal Women Researcher Award 2017)
- Dra. Deung-Jang Choi (Ikerbasque Research Fellow, CFM. Guest Researcher, CIC nanoGUNE)
- Dra. Marta Autore (Post-doctoral Researcher, CIC nanoGUNE)
- Dra. Aitziber López Cortajarena (Ikerbasque Research Professor, CIC biomaGUNE)
3. Amona's power
February 9, 10:30 at Materials Physics Center (
Guided visit and workshop devoted to women above 55. The visit will allow you to share the insights of the excellent and international research activity performed at our centers. In the workshop we will find the scientific potential hidden behind everyday things, allowing the scientist that lives inside all of us to get out. We will show you a bunch of experiments that can easily be reproduced back at home. Sing up for this actity here (link) or at this telephone number: +34 688673654
4. Science is indeed a girls' thing.
February 9, 17:30 at CIC nanoGUNE (Tolosa Hiribide 76, 20018 Donostia-San Sebastian)
Women teenagers
This is an open workshop for secondary school students. Lead by the female researchers of our centers, the teenagers will have an opportunity to be “scientists for a day” and perform hands-on experiments in nanoscience.
*Parental permission is requested to participate in this workshop.
5. High-school visits
February 9, 9:30 at CFM and DIPC
Teenagers
In the framework of the regular school visits program of the CFM and DIPC, a group of students will live an exclusively women-driven visit and will learn about women in science. The visit is already arranged with the school.
6. WinS Colloquium: Career development outside academia
February 9, 12:00 at CIC biomaGUNE
Researchers
In this seminar Dr. Alba Centeno Perez (Graphenea) & Dr. Africa G. Barrientos (Midatech Pharma) will give us their view on switching career from academia to industry, prospects, and outcomes. After short talks, an open discussion will bring the opportunity to young and senior researchers to discuss with them the pros and cons of a career development outside academia in local companies.
