NEW (CRYO-)FIB MONSTER AT nanoGUNE

2022/04/27

On April 25, the Electron Microscopy group organized a seminar to present to the Basque community the opportunities that will be derived from the new (Cryo-)FIB equipment that will be installed in nanoGUNE.

In November 2021 CIC nanoGUNE was awarded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Spanish Government a project grant for the acquisition of a new FIB. The equipment will be a state-of-the-art focused ion beam electron microscope, which will combine features that are not normally present together in a single instrument: an extensive set of detectors for materials science applications; Xe plasma ion source for high-speed milling targeting for batteries sector and industry; TOF SIMS for isotope resolved elemental analysis; and a cryogenic setup, typically dedicated to biological applications. This combination of features in a single instrument will be unique in Europe and will provide new research opportunities in the energy sector, in materials science related to low-temperature physics, and in biological sciences related to cryo-cell electron tomography.

In this seminar, Dr. Evgenii Modin (nanoGUNE) and Dr. Nicola GA Abrescia (Ikerbasque Research Professor at CIC bioGUNE) describe the technologies behind this new equipment and outline the new research lines (e.g. virus-cell infection structural studies lead by the Abrescia Lab at CIC bioGUNE). In conclusion, the new (cryo)-FIB will promote new interactions for the nanoGUNE scientists, and for the Basque and the Spanish research communities.
