Diogo Castro-Vaz

Diogo C. Vaz is a postdoctoral researcher and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellow at CIC nanoGUNE (San Sebastián). For the last 2 years he has been working on the proof-of-concept development of a new type of spin-based transistor in collaboration with Intel, as well as on the optimization of spin-charge conversion effects for magnetization readout. He is an expert in spintronics, magnetoelectrics, 2D electron systems, strongly correlated oxides, and nanofabrication, with particular interest in devising new spin-based devices for logic and memory applications. Among his recent achievements, Diogo has discovered and studied new spin-charge conversion phenomena and metrology in several 2D and chiral systems, resulting to two logic device applications.
Diogo obtained a Masters in Nanotechnology Engineering from Universidade Nova de Lisboa (2015, Portugal) and a PhD in Physics and Chemistry of Materials from Sorbonne Université (2019, France), with Highest Honors. Since then he has published 13 peer-reviewed articles, in prestigious journals such as Nature, Nature Materials, Nature Electronics and Advanced Materials, and obtained more than 600 citations, all possible through collaborations with several research groups and industry partners worldwide. Additionally, his work resulted in one patent for a ferroelectric-based spin logic device, and the world’s first experimental demonstration of a new magnetoelectric spin-orbit logic device at room temperature (to be published), highlighted by Intel as a breakthrough in “new switches for energy efficient computing”. He has presented his work in several conferences, both research- and device-oriented, including 3 invited talks and 7 oral contributions. He has also supervised the work of 2 Masters and 1 PhD student and participated in 5 R&D projects. In 2020, he secured 160,000€ in funding with a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship.
