The Nanoscience Cooperative Research Center CIC nanoGUNE (San Sebastian, Basque Country, Spain), opens its doors to host Ukrainian scientist who have been forced to leave Ukraine as a result of the ongoing war. 

Researchers from the Basque Nanoscience Research Center CIC nanoGUNE (San Sebastian, Spain), in collaboration with POLYMAT (San Sebastian, Spain), the Institute of Physics of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics (both in Halle, Germany) demonstrate the all-electrical generation, manipulation, and detection of spin polarization in chiral single-crystalline Tellurium nanowires. The results, published in Nature Materials (DOI: 10.1038/s41563-022-01211-7), pave the way for the development of magnet-free chirality-based spintronic devices.

CIC nanoGUNE —the Basque nanoscience research center—, BerriUP —a startup accelerator in Donostia-San Sebastian—,  Graphenea —nanoGUNE’s first startup devoted to the production and marketing of graphene— and Fomento San Sebastian —municipal economic development body in Donostia-San Sebastian— have signed a collaboration agreement to drive forward proposals relating to research into graphene. So they are launching Global Graphene Call II, which is designed to develop business ideas linked to graphene.

The Emakumeak Zientzian 2022 initiative, organized by seventeen Basque organizations to mark February 11, International Day of Women and Girls in Science, got off to a strong start. The launch held this morning in Donostia-San Sebastian was attended by Jabier Larrañaga, Head of Economic Promotion, Tourism and Rural Environment of the Charter Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, Marisol Garmendia, Head of Economic Development and Employment of Donostia-San Sebastian City Council, Aitziber L. Cortajarena, Scientific Director of CIC biomaGUNE, Ainhoa Lete, Co-founder and CEO of BuntPlanet, and Sandra Camarero, Ikerbasque researcher at POLYMAT, as well as the coordinators of the Emakumeak Zientzian 2022 initiative Mónica Moreno (POLYMAT) and Itziar Otegui (CIC nanoGUNE).

20 students are participating in the third edition of the Winter School run by CIC nanoGUNE. For three days, from Wednesday to Friday, February 2-4, 2022, a select group of students will have the opportunity to find out what the daily life in a research center such as nanoGUNE is like.

The nanoGUNE Workshop 2022, organized by the predoctoral researchers of nanoGUNE to celebrate the 13^th anniversary of the Basque Nanoscience Cooperative Research Center, has been held on January 31.

This morning the Emakumeak Zientzian project, which has been growing year on year, was presented by seventeen Basque organizations. They confirmed their commitment to the objectives of the initiative: to make the activity of women in science visible, to break with the typically male roles attributed to scientific and technical activities, and to encourage girls and teenagers to choose scientific careers. With these objectives in mind, the organizations are coming together to run a joint program of activities to mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which is celebrated every year on February 11. 

The book “NanoGUNE, txikiaren xarma” dealing with the setting-up and development of the CIC nanoGUNE research center from its very beginnings was presented in January 2021. After its splendid one-year run, the book has now been translated into Spanish (NanoGUNE, el encanto de lo pequeño) and English (NanoGUNE, the charm of the small) and is available to the general public.

CIC nanoGUNE has just launched the program for summer internships, which runs every year. University students are offered the chance to get involved in the activity of a world-class research center.
