During the past two decades layer structure - 2D Materials -have been intensively studied experimentally and theoretically. In addition to graphene, inorganic layered structures have increasingly become the focus of research. To unlock the application potential of such materials requires the fundamental understanding of the interplay between structural and electronic properties of two-dimensional structures. Some basic aspects of this interplay will be explained. Especially the simple concepts of isoelectronicity and octett rule will be stressed, giving ideas for detailed quantum mechanical simulations of specific structures. These can finally offer a novel playground to implement nanoscale two-dimensional semiconductor materials for devices with improved electronic, optoelectronic and thermoelectric functionality – for example.
