Third consecutive María de Maeztu distinction reinforces nanoGUNE’s research excellence
CIC nanoGUNE has been awarded the María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence distinction for the third consecutive time, reaffirming its position as an internationally leading research center in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
The distinction, awarded for the period from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2030, is granted by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, through the State Research Agency (Agencia Estatal de Investigación, AEI). It forms part of Spain’s flagship Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu Excellence Program, which recognizes research centers and units demonstrating outstanding scientific leadership, international impact, and a strong strategic vision to advance the frontiers of knowledge.
The María de Maeztu accreditation is awarded through a highly competitive evaluation process carried out by independent international scientific committees. In its evaluation report, the committee notes that “CIC nanoGUNE presents a consistently convincing proposal with excellent achievements in the past and a well-thought-out research plan for the future”, and highlights nanoGUNE’s sustained excellence and institutional maturity, as well as its ability to combine frontier fundamental research with long-term technological impact
This third consecutive accreditation further underlines nanoGUNE’s consistency in scientific performance, its capacity to attract and train international talent, and its contribution to the Basque, Spanish, and European research and innovation ecosystem, reinforcing its role as a reference center at the interface between fundamental science and future technologies.
