Medina, a mechatronics engineer who joined the Basque Nanoscience Research Centre in 2024, detailed one of her most ambitious projects, which involves creating transporters that can facilitate embryo implantation and help sperm reach the ovum. This miniaturized technology could transform fertility treatments, improving the chances of success in insemination and in vitro fertilization procedures.

Over the past three months, Dr. Plou has been actively participating in the EIT Jumpstarter, one of Europe’s leading pre-acceleration programs for researchers and early-stage innovators. Out of 908 initial applicants across multiple sectors, the nanoGUNE-led initiative stood out in the Health category for its scientific excellence and market potential, earning a place in the next phase of the program. 

CIC nanoGUNE is fine-tuning the launch of Prospect Biotech, a business initiative that aims to optimise the production and monitoring phases of cell therapies such as CAR-T, thus making them more accessible and efficient. The new enterprise will be exploiting technology developed by the researcher Javier Plou at nanoGUNE; it has received backing from Basque Tek Ventures and the renowned EU EIT Jumpstarter programme, for which it received an award this very week at the Grand Final in Budapest.
